On June 11, 2012, the Egyptian People's Assembly will discuss a report by its Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee, dealing with the criteria for selection of the members of the Constituent Assembly.
Meanwhile, the People's Assembly is receiving nominations for membership of the Constituent Assembly. The Azhar has nominated a number of persons, among them Doctor Hasan al-Shāfi'ī, president of the Arabic language department, Azhar University, and Nasr Farīd Wāsil, former Muftī. The Coptic Orthodox Church nominated 21 persons, among them Bishop Mūsá, Bishop of Youth and Georgette Qalīnī, human rights activist.
Other institutions, such as the Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF) and the National Council for Women Rights (NCWR), have nominated persons for the constituent assembly.
For his part, the speaker of the People's Assembly, Sa'd Katātnī stressed that the formation of the assembly should be accomplished before the presidential election runoff. He further assured that the agreement concerning the principles of forming the assembly will lead to a constitutional draft representing all segments of society.
