After his reappointment as Minister of Religious Endowments, Dr. Muhammad Mukhtār Gum’ah stated that he is planning to regulate the Egyptian religious discourse more tightly in order to purge it from extremist elements. Furthermore, he wants to improve the investments of the endowment funds in order for the nation to benefit. Both Dr. Shawqī ‘Allām, Grand Muftī of Egypt, and Shaykh Muhammad al-Bastawīsī, head of the Egyptian imāms (religious preachers) expressed their contentment with Gum’ah’s reappointment and praised Jum’ah’s previous achievements in combating extremist thought and his rapprochement with al-Azhar, Egypt’s main religious institution (Sanā’ Hashīsh, al-Wafd, Feb. 27, p. 2).
