Three years ago, on February 27, 2013, we interviewed Aḥmad Ashūsh in our office. These were the days of President Muhammad Mursī and we then made efforts to understand the motivations of the different people involved various Islamists movements. Aḥmad Ashūsh was arrested in October 2013 for the terrorist attack that targeted the satellite telecom facility in Maʿadi, Cairo. Al Nahar reported on October 11, 2013, that he had confessed that he had carried out this attack on instructions of Muslim Brotherhood leader Khayrat al-Shāṭir and Ḥāzim Ṣalāḥ Abū Ismā‘īl.http://www.alnaharegypt.com/t~152406. We don’t know what his links were to both people but we did get a glimpse of his ideology and beliefs in our meeting with him. It is important to understand his arguments in order to understand motivations and properly report on this difficult to access section of Egyptian Islamist thought.
